  • All about the headwraps!

This is in response to this: LINK

I should start this off by saying that I will be stating that I do not support the oppression of women. I support a woman's right to choose for herself. I am also not of any defined faith, so my decision to wear headcoverings is my own and not mandated by anyone.

This is what I look like pretty much on a daily basis:

However, I occasionally like to wear head coverings. They range from Turbans (I am the TURBAN QUEEN!) for fun and costume:

All the way to full face coverings:

Fancy full face covering. (Hard to type in this thing!)

I have these mostly for the heck of it, but also because of dance and some re-enacting that I do. As such, I have had to do research into what they are and their purpose. Needless to say, these are different from the Niquabs/Hijabs that Paul is asking for, but, as women wearing turbans is also a taboo, I felt they needed to be included.

I really do not have a reason behind wearing them other than they are comfy. I suppose this is why I have such a relaxed view about them. Also, I see nothing wrong with modest dress! The way I look at it, if, in my case, a man is only attracted to me because of my looks, how can that be "true?" There is alot more to a relationship than just looks! Sadly this gets lost on alot of people.

  • Art or "Distorting History?"

This was in my local newspaper a couple days ago: LINK

Long story short, a student at one of the local high schools painted a mural that resembled the flag-raising at Iwo-Jima. The major difference here being that instead of solidiers raising a flag on a battlefield, it was a mural of students raising a wind turbine on a green pasture (photo below). The mural was submitted and voted on by students and approved by the school. Now people are saying that it dishonors veterans, pushes political agendas, and distorts history. There are even teachers and veterans groups asking for it to be painted over.

    IwoJima

The original Iwo-Jima photo from WWII

Now, there are people, like myself, who support her art because it carries a deeper meaning to it than just a pretty picture on the wall. The girl has sauid she respects the veterans and what they have done and has explained the mural as being a representation of the younger generations and the battles that they do or will face in the future. I am taking the whole "dishonoring veterans" idea with a grain of salt because it was those very same vets who fought for this young lady's right to create this work of art. This is not to say that some things shouldn't be made, just that the right is there and this isn't one of those pieces.

What has really got me with this is that people actually believe that this young lady knows nothing of what it was the veterans fought for and was striving to offend them! They say that the school has failed in it's teachings and that it should never have been allowed to get past the drawing board. Maybe it is the artist in me but I have tried to see how this could possibly be offensive, and I fail to see it.

So I am curious, what are your reactions to the picture? Do you find it offensive or do you think it is okay? Do you think it is pushing some sort of political agenda? Tell me your thoughts.

  • Thankful

This pretty much sums up my thoughts on the Holiday season:

Get a playlist! Standalone player Get Ringtones

I know that while the holidays may not always be the happiest of times, I still have so much to be thankful for. I have a loving family, great friends, a job, a house over my head, food to eat, and clothes to wear. I might not always do the best things, but I sure as heck try to be the best darn person I can be. That, my friends, is all a person needs in the world.

    Merry Christmas Friends.

  • Let's Play.

Let's play a game. What is the name of the song and the group that sings these lyrics:

"I got you. You got whatevers left of me to get. Our conversations are like minefields. No ones found a safe way through one yet."

First person to get it right has to post their own lyrics for us to guess.

@DanikeViolette - Though not as good as having an actual teacher, I would suggest buying bellydance videos and learning from them. Here are some sites to check out: http://bellydance.org/shop/ http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1260907795/ref=sr_pg_1?ie=UTF8&rs=130&keywords=bellydance%20dvd&bbn

@sarahb_86 - That's so cool. I've wanted to become a belly dancer for quite a while. I want to take classes, but the nearest classes are at least 70 miles away. That's awesome though. Kind of gives me some inspiration.

@DanikeViolette - I needed something to do in college and read an article in a local pennysaver-type newspapaer about it. I went to a class for fun and it just grew into me preforming and putting together shows.
  • DanikeViolette
By the way... How did you become a belly dancer?!?!
