You are really going to do that in a recession?
Okay so apparently there is this tattoo artist who had the brilliant idea that he should take HUGE stacks of 1 dollar bills and create laser cut art out of it. LINK
Do I even need to say how incredibly stupid, not to mention illegal, this is? We are in a recession and the dude is using REAL money to cut up and make into art! What was using fake money not good enough? Would it somehow lose it's coolness factor if it were fake. I mean look at those pictures! He isn't using one or two , he is using stacks of 50-100 dollars! It seems to me that he could have just used regular paper and the art would still look just as good and be just as effective. This is nothing more than rubbing salt into the wound.
I am an artist too and can appreciate good art, but it seems to me that this money could have been better used getting donated to a cause to help those who are losing their jobs ad homes to the recession. Yes the guy might make hundreds of dollars selling these pieces, but considering the amount of disregard of the current economic situation, I highly doubt he will be doing anything good with it.
What are your thoughts? Do you think this is wrong or are you okay with it?

Well, it's interesting for sure and a little weird too. Unique. I don't question their skills but can see your point. I agree with what you're saying but at the same time, they can do what they want.
@DBF21 -
"...they can do what they want."
The law here states otherwise. That and seriously, SERIOUSLY bad planning on the artists part. People are trying to cut back and this guy decides to carve up money. Can't really say I would be for it even if we weren't in a recession either.
honestly, if i knew them, i'd wham them over the head with a tire iron and run off with the money.
he could have just photocopied one one dollar bill and do that over, right?
PS: i guess doing the first thing in this CM would warrent as illegal, yaw?
aside from using actual money, its pretty cool =/
Oh hell no! I get sick just thinking how much that money costs in my own country's currency.
Well, I'm certainly no expert but I think it's fine personally. You are focusing too much a) on someone else's art and b) on a piece of paper with pictures on it. You know they print new ones every day right? So what, $100 down the drain? You don't think more money than that is destroyed or lost in a day in America. Although, I have to say the art really wasn't even that cool.
I wonder how much he sold it for (if he even sold it)?
@ItsWhatEyeKnow - Not sure either way. I hope if he did sell it, that he did something responsible with it atleast.
Its a shame, but I cant say anything because I dont know his reasoning behind it.
It is illegal; he is defacing American currency. He should be prosecuting for doing so.
The U.S. mint sells shredded money in its gift shop. Maybe he managed to get his hands on some retired currency somehow.
Well, this is illegal, lol. So I don't know why he isn't getting in trouble for it, basically. Otherwise, yeah, I think it's really stupid that this guy would do something like this, considering the state of our economy. I know I wouldn't do something like this. But at the same time, if it's his own money, he can do what he wants with it. Some people spend their money on drugs, others on really expensive organic foods, others on pretty art supplies. He's spending it on... his own artistic happiness, I suppose. It's not really my place to say "don't do that" beyond what the law says against defacing money.
What a moron.
@SeeBeeWrite - That I can understand and would be fine with, but the site does not clarify that.
@SerenaDante - I am torn on this because on one hand I can respect the artistic side, being an artist, but on the other, as you and I said, it was just really poor timing.
Personally, I like it. And I love that he had the balls to use real money instead of something photocopied. Art isn't about the look, you should know that ("I'm an artist, too"). In this case it was about the statement he made writing "the thrill gone" on real money. What do I get from that? Clearly, he doesn't care about the money anymore, it means nothing to him. Maybe that means he's decided on something good, maybe that means he's hit a low spot in life. But to be honest, it looks like he's saying that he's not living for money, he's living for art.
Also, the Kermit with 3-D glasses is way cool.
maybe you can think of it as kinda expensive art. The carving materials cost about $100 - in stacks of bills. Probably cheaper than a bronze ingot. It is illegal though.
@HeartOfPandora - Like I said in one of the above comments. I am torn on this because I am an artist and can respect it artistically, and the fact that he had the balls to do it, I just found it to be a very badly planned collection. I know that the general idea of the piece is the idea that we should not rely on money, but still.
I agree the tats are pretty interesting. :)
@explorer9360 - Good observation. It is true that in terms of production, this probaby did cost alot less than other pieces. Pricing of pieces in the art world are generally based on the amount of time and effort put into them, so it can be assumed that this sold for much more than what it was created with.
some artists seem to think that anything is art.
@supsoo - lol, I have a post about that, too. Don't even get me started on that topic.
i often think what is the point of this big piece of metal in the middle of the street? or what is so significent about that blob of paint on a clean canvas? i promise you art is more about advertisement and pr than anything else.
@supsoo - Tis sad but true.
As cool and amazing as that looks, it still makes me want to slap my forehead.
Art supplies often cost more than $100. With the fame he's getting, he probably is making profit off them. So for him, it is money well spent.Besides, they do look kind of cool.
If he used fake money, it defeats the whole purpose. He also did one out of three stacks with a skull. My interpretation is "To be obsessed with money will be the death of you." There is a lot of art that is provocative, and often times, it's suppose to deliver a deeper message. I already commented on this before, so I'll save you the trouble.
@phantomFive - Oh, I do not deny they are very artistic, the unveiling of the collection was poorly planned in my opinion.
"Art supplies often cost more than $100."
This is the reason behind the term "Starving Artist". lol
@laytexduckie - Yeah I know you did. For some strange reason this post has grown back up in popularity. I think the concept and the artistic idea behind it is great but I just don't think the timing of the whole piece was great. I can honestly say thatr if we were not in a recession right now I would have no really major issues with this, despite it still being illegal. My thing is more with the timing of it than anything else.
@sarahb_86 - Are you feeling lots of pain from the recession or something?
